Most Think The CEO Is The Person With The Power
Most people think the CEO is the person with the power.
What they often don’t see is the pressure.
Years ago, my husband sketched this idea on a napkin to explain it to CEOs. We later turned it into this illustration for our book.
CEOs frequently find themselves between two groups with legitimate expectations.
The board expects results, stewardship, strategy and accountability.
Staff expect leadership, support, communication and stability.
Both are right.
The challenge is that the CEO is often the only person carrying both sets of expectations simultaneously.
Leadership is often less about authority and more about balancing competing responsibilities.
